I identify with you. Due to budget cuts, many schools are not able to allow students to take home books. Here we go … The American victory at Saratoga (New York) in 1777 led to the French to have faith in our ability to win the war. They signed the Treaty of Paris openly increased its aid to us, they send money troops, supplies, and navy. (Prior to this little money and supplies were sent in secret and did not want open conflict with Britain.) Instead of participating in a full scale war now combined American-French forces, British General Clinton, in charge of all British forces in the United, the campaign decided to move south, where he felt he had more supporters of many. The British had some success there, taking in Savannah Georgia in 1778, and in 1779 took Charleston (then Charles Town), called "the jewel of the south", so named because their value products rice, indigo and snuff. The Britsh also took Camden, South Carolina in 1780. Camden became an important base for the British, as well as a place where supplies were gathered. The British were very effective in what is called "conventional" war, online, outdoors. But they had not experienced with "guerrilla warfare" before, and had the teacher Daniel Morgan …. We lacked the forces in the south to win a large scale battle, as Daniel Morgan and Nathanael Greene each directed to the British in a wild goose chase through woods and paths, guerrilla warfare, drawing the British away from their supply lines. (Greene was in charge of all forces in the south. Washington wanted Greene to take his place if something happened to him. While we do not hear much about him, was very valuable for Washington and the war.) The commander of British troops from the south, Cornwallis decided to concentrate its troops in Virginia in hopes of capturing the Carolinas. Washington dispatched General Lafayette (the Marquis de Lafayette) to the British approach, keeping in Yorktown, Virginia. Meanwhile, the French ships and British fought in the so-called Battle of the Chesapeake, also known as the Battle of the Virginia Capes. The French Navy under the Comte de Grasse damaged many British ships, which lets you block then British commander Cornwallis by sea. Cornwallis was forced to surrender on October 19, 1778. This was the last major battle of the war, after which the British government gave control of the colonies. To summerize, the British commander decided to move the Clinton campaign south, where I thought it would be a most loyal support. The British succeeded in the capture of Savannah, Charleston and Camden. Cornwallis decided to concentrate his troops in Virginia. Wiith the help of the French Navy, we were able to trap Cornwallis by sea, and kept American landlocked General Lafayette. The Battle of Yorktown took place, what resulting in an American victory. Was the decisive battle in the granting of independence to the colonies. A place I would recommend to the southern campaign is: www.eyewitnesstohistory.com / Yorktown.htm You can refer to the "Battle of the Chesapeake" in line if you need details of that battle. A note on the General Lafayette … He was a wealthy French aristocrat who came here from 19 to serve in the army of Washington, as an American general, do not accept pay. In fact, he gave all his fortune the cause of war. You can read that it is a French general, which is not correct. He wore the uniform, and served as an Ameican general. Another little known fact is that there women who disguised themselves as men to fight in the war. The official state heroine Massachusetts is one of them, Deborah Samson.
