Surf Performance Analysis: Rodeo Clown Flip
Anyone who has seen a surfer or skateboarder out of a movement of air flight is astonished that a being human can do this amazing trick. Although they are completely stunned by the performance of these maneuvers, these sports often have an unfair reputation not be truly professional. Often consider these athletes to be just kids who have spent too much time playing on the beach.
The surf and skate sports are no longer dominated by talented athletes only. These professional athletes spend many hours of training. Professional surfers now spend almost as much time away from the waves, making (Often with sneakers) on the balls of balance, with weights, and in the gym and swimming pool. They do thorough warm-up sessions before leaving to compete and often also have routines to cool off after a hangover.
The use of scientific analysis in the surf has been long in coming. There are several reasons for this and I will not give a history of surfing soul, but the main reason is the difficulty of carrying out any physiological or biomechanical testing a surfer. Because surfers do their sport in the water and change, the change of the waves (size, orientation, slope …), is very difficult to test them under the same conditions and obtain relevant scientific results.
Recently, for the first time a team of scientists were joined by some professional surfers and recorded in the Mentawai palette of speed, cruising speed and heart rate during surfing sessions. They also took blood samples for lactic acid and control data hydration. These scientists were able to provide surfers with some physiological and performance data that will certainly help to better train for competition.
Using video to analyze the surf is another way in which these athletes and other non-professional surfer could improve its performance. Professional surfers get lots of video of their performances from all different angles and we hope you use this information to make improvements. Of course, because of the waves and the change in three dimensional nature of surfing (moving up and down, forwards and sideways), it is difficult to make comparisons with the video.
As I was looking through some of the video of the trip to the Mentawai surf, find one of Jordy Smith of South Africa, doing a Rodeo Clown Flip. We will not try to describe the movement here. About the same time in a competition in the Maldives, an American surfer, Patrick was Gudauskus completeing the first rodeo clown in the competition.
We decided to look at these two videos and compare their performance. Jordy is the first video wave after wave and Pat is the first part of the second video.

Once you get over being completely amazed that surfers can do things like a wave, take a closer look. The first thing you'll notice Jordy is that a wave is much larger than Pat and this can make comparisons difficult. We can still see the art though and we will do it in stages.
- Setup: Jordy spear in his rodeo clown with facing board almost vertically into the sky, while Pat board is about 30 degrees from vertical when starts. This may be due to the size of the wave. Unfortunately, those of us who sail for fun and do not have sponsors, do not have too many opportunities to see us in action. However, you can set a camera on a beach or get someone to film it from the beach. Try to get the video player directly to the wave of the beach. It is difficult to analyze their performance in the study of video that was filmed at an angle of the wave. It is also useful to have some kind of scale calibration can be used to measure the height (as we did in a previous post on measuring the high jump). Of course, if you can get more than one camera settings can really take a look at his technique of multiple viewpoints, which makes sense for a sport like surfing.
