Building Community Pride From Within

When I first went into private practice as a Hypnotherapist, in the early 90 (s) I was sure of two things. "I knew I wanted to work predominantly in GBLTQ community, wanted to find a better and more effective way to deal with a major problems of our community, and low self worth and self esteem.

Flash to 2008. I continued working in the community, as well as a specialist Hypnotherapist addiction studies. For the first nine years I worked in private practice with chemical dependency agencies, a medical program based smoking cessation, and extension positions for HIV, AIDS and customers. I followed that with nine years as the Clinical Coordinator of Project NEON, first Reclamation Service in Stonewall, and later in Seattle Counseling Services.

NEON Project works with gay and bisexual men who inject crystal meth. When for the first time the program worked with the two components of the program, the peer education component, (with current users of meth distribution of information resources, needles, condoms, etc, and the clinical part of the program that deals with customers who wish to reduce either down or stop using drugs).

Within a few years I was spending most of my time in development and growth of the clinical part of the program, using the combination of my skills as a Hypnotherapist, Neuro Linguistic Programming, Time Line Therapist, and Chemical Dependency Counselor.

It was during this time they actually began to explore why our community has been so badly affected by drugs and alcohol. The answers that came to mind, though not new, it helped me to perfect a method use the incredible brain power, through Hypnotherapy, NLP, and mindfulness to resolve these issues.

What I notice realize is that drug abuse, addiction and community GBLTQ comes from our original beliefs and agreements about ourselves, our deeply internalized messages about our sexual identity, internalized homophobia and our own staff.

Having internalized homophobia, not always evident in the obvious "I hate "type beliefs or behaviors, but manifest due to the deep core beliefs we were taught and absorbed, and all based on fear and ignorance.

What kind of messages you have subconsciously accepted and agreed on what it means to be LGBTQ while growing up? How many times I have said time and again that they are sick, perverted, unless, need to change is not worthy of being in a loving relationship recognized, and often you meet abused, used, and it is less than your straight friends and associates? As we begin to recognize these messages, we realize that we are not alone and that we have all been affected by similar messages in one way or another.

Think about the messages of movies, books, television, parents, churches, schools, or even our friends heterosexual as we grow. How many of us can remember sitting down and have a chat with Mom or Dad, and says that someday we would meet a good girl, or a child (same sex), and we love and get married. I daresay that not many of us had this kind of interaction. Instead he can give examples of how many of us were in the schoolyard, or in the gym locker room, and the words, queer, lesbian or gay, were released without mercy in us by those we consider our peers. At an early age it hurts, it hurts as we age further. And no matter the age, leaves a deep scar. For the rest of our lives we carry with us the deep conviction that we are less than our friends, simply because of our sexual orientation.

As we age some of us bottle those feelings, they become our constant companion, and our worst enemy. They feed of the latest developments hate crime, slander or religious fanaticism, political agendas, sometimes the most difficult issue to address is the rejection of our own family because sexual orientation. Some of us express these feelings in a life in which we are still in the closet, never feeling that can be your true self, always having to hide our feelings, fear it will be rejected by those who "love" us. Some of us express these feelings internalized in bold and in your face identities we are an activist, or community champions, drag queens, kings, leather, etc. (OK to be an activist, being a drag queen, become king of leather, so it can be argued as appropriate ways that we created / manifested by ourselves), but even have to express a special role now identified, close us, and hides much more than what is true about us.

Everyone of us needs, and deserves to be accepted and valued for who we really are, whether homosexual or heterosexual. This kind of acceptance and value creates feelings of self confidence, self esteem, and self-esteem. As gay and lesbian young people quickly learn to suppress our thoughts and feelings. We learned through messages so subtle and not so subtle that it is wrong – or acceptable – to be who we are, have sexual feelings members of our own gender. We learned that to admit that these feelings cause us pain, humiliation, torture and even death.

In one case a young man was trying to come to grips with his homosexuality, and felt that it was time to face his father with the revelation. The father's response was less kind. The young man made the mistake of telling his father on the second floor of the family home. The father was so angry that he threw his son from the window. Fortunately the Young experienced only a game leg. As was the mental damage was much deeper than a broken bone.

In my case, I started coming to grips with my homosexual feelings at a young age. I had a friend whom I thought I could trust my life. We had been friends since fourth grade. Since he had moved to an adjoining town. I sat down and wrote him a letter saying he had to talk, the talk was less than successful. I had only superficial contact with my best friend since then and he felt it necessary to tell all he could to stay away from the stranger. Ironically I found out years later that this friend had committed suicide amid rumors of his own homosexuality.

These early experiences create basic beliefs, basic agreements, about who we are now and how to fit into society. These become the foundation of our ego. Without consciousness always fought against these agreements, while institutions continue to struggle against social discrimination that strikes us every day. Examples are the hate crimes committed against people our community, or the constant struggle for basic rights enjoyed by straight couples, to same-sex marriage legally recognized partnerships. Although many same-sex partnerships last as long as or more then many straight marriages. Our basic rights such as housing, employment and privacy are constantly threatened legally thanks to these groups as fundamentalists and homophobic, the Ex-Gay Ministries, etc.

Violent attacks against the community generally excused as GBLTQ lack of the victim to be sexual deviants.

What does all this mean in terms of Hypnotherapy, NLP and Mindfulness?

Your brain is an incredibly sophisticated piece of equipment. In fact, is said to be so sophisticated that no computer will never match your ability to think and reason.

Like a computer that receives information through the central nervous system, resulting in electro – chemistry of vibrating-bit bytes, loads on a hard drive, and has been doing from the moment we are first born. According to some theories of this process has been going on for several months before our birth.

More simply think your mind has three different components, the conscious mind, the brain and the subconscious mind.

Our conscious mind is composed of our central nervous system, our five senses and possibly more. Thus, downloading each piece of information that we are always exposed. From birth until puberty (about 11 to 13) that we accept everything in this information without any analysis. Like on a computer keyboard, the records of the mind aware of every bit of information and the traces in the physical part of the mind, the brain.

The Brain as a computer hard disk stores information for future reproduction in the form of neural firing patterns, electro – chemical bits of information that propagate through the means of production of behavior which our personality. From simply absorb this entry mundane and stimulation all contribute to making it in our agreements, our project, our road map individual personal reality. Many of these beliefs are unfortunately merely defined in same-sex attraction must therefore be the only main motivation our lives. From age 13 onwards begin to develop the ability to analyze the information we receive. Many of those pieces of information, our original agreements, become what many people call our inner child. The LGBTQ community most of us start with the false beliefs and agreements about what and who we are. Often accept the agreements that we are sinners moral deviates, and less than our straight peers. These thoughts and ideas turning our fundamental beliefs, and finally contribute to internalized homophobia.

One of the many human challenges is that we identify with our bodies, our bodies and thoughts and feelings as the ultimate truth of who we really are. This is simply not the case. We are what we have a body, we are what we have a set of thoughts and feelings about not things. We believe that our value is defined by the exterior.

We strive to create the so-called external success can pull up, get a good career, make a good living, and go on fabulous vacation, but none of that will matter until they release our false beliefs and agreements.

Finally, the subconscious mind, vast in scope, truly and simply tailor our programming experiences. Like what we see in the screen of our computers, things that are manifested in our lives and our actions perhaps most importantly, our reactions and responses to people, situations and circumstances of our daily life is dictated by our deepest beliefs.

It is interesting to note that the subconscious mind processes images in our minds. If I asked him, describes his mother, is a paragraph in your mind which says: "My mother is 72 years old, 5 '8", 165 lbs, blonde hair red, etc. "or if you see a picture of his mother, a picture in your mind than it sounds and a feeling that it evokes.

We can rationalize we can minimize, we can deny our agreements each and every moment of every day. But until we confront our deepest core beliefs, will always end continue along the old road known.

With hypnotherapy you are learning to deal with those beliefs and agreements, and foundations / Staff Energy domain that are actually able to cut the emotional ties to a very deep level of these agreements. Once these ties are cut you are able to reconstruct a negative base with a strong, positive disintegration, a foundation that allows you to accept himself as a perfect whole and complete human being happens to be a member of the community GBLTQ!

As a community we've come, we are still exposed to a multitude of challenges on several fronts.

We are each armed with a wonderful and amazing tool and powerful mind. This tool can be either a master or a servant ruthless and absolutely wonderful each of us has the power to master this tool and live the life of our dreams.
